Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) defeating former D’Tigers captain, Olumide Oyedeji and ex-international Ejike Ugboaja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Abdullahi secured 48 votes in Thursday’s election in Abuja, while Oyedeji received eight votes. Ugboaja did not secure any vote.

Abdullahi succeeds Musa Kida as the federation’s president ushering in a new administration for Nigerian basketball.

Meanwhile, Ugo Udezue emerged as NBBF Vice President unopposed having been the only candidate for the position.

Abdullahi, who serves as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria takes over at a crucial time for the sport with stakeholders seeking improvements in domestic competitions, grassroots development, players’ welfare, funding and administration.

His emergence also follows the successes of Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress and growing calls for stronger structures to sustain the sport’s development.

The new administration is expected to build on these achievements, expand opportunities for players and strengthen domestic basketball competitions across the country.
