Bayern Munich Versus Ajax to Open Kenya’s New 60,000-Capacity Stadium in January 2027
Kenyan President William Ruto announced the encounter, describing it as a historic occasion that would bring two prominent European football clubs to the East African nation.

Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam will open Kenya’s newly built 60,000-capacity Raila Odinga International Stadium with a high-profile friendly on January 5, 2027.

The two European clubs confirmed the fixture on Wednesday, with the match set to mark the official opening of the stadium, formerly known as Talanta Stadium, in Nairobi.
Kenyan President William Ruto announced the encounter, describing it as a historic occasion that would bring two prominent European football clubs to the East African nation.

Bayern, the German champions, and Ajax, one of the Netherlands’ most successful clubs, are expected to attract significant interest from Kenyan football fans. Bayern striker Harry Kane is among the star players supporters could hope to see in action.
Ajax described the occasion as a landmark moment for Kenya, coming ahead of the country’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

The continental tournament is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
Located along Ngong Road in Nairobi, the stadium was named after former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who died in October 2025. Ruto said the decision honoured Odinga’s passion for football and his contributions to the sport.
The president described the facility as Kenya’s first purpose-built football and rugby stadium and its first new international stadium since the opening of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in 1987.
The venue features a hybrid playing surface, 52 skyboxes, video assistant referee (VAR) technology and goal-line technology.

Ruto also said the Bayern-Ajax fixture would be organised through corporate partnerships and a commercial model aimed at attracting private investment and generating revenue.
The friendly is expected to provide a major test event for the new facility as Kenya strengthens its sporting infrastructure and prepares to host Africa’s premier football tournament in 2027.
