The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking amendments to the 1999 Constitution to pave the way for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The Assembly also approved the Kano State Supplementary Appropriation and Amendment Bill, 2026, reducing the proposed expenditure from N1.478 trillion to approximately N1.211 trillion.

The two bills were passed during Tuesday's plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Isma'il Falgore, following consideration by the Committee of the Whole and approval at the third reading.

During deliberations, lawmakers examined all 26 clauses of the state police bill before approving it.

The proposed constitutional amendment seeks to provide a legal framework for state governments to establish and operate their own police services.

The move comes amid renewed national debate over decentralising policing, with growing calls for state police to address Nigeria's persistent security challenges.

Meanwhile, lawmakers approved a downward review of the 2026 supplementary budget proposal submitted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, reducing it by about N266.61 billion following legislative scrutiny.
