The Ekiti State Police Command has debunked reports that the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, was kidnapped by armed thugs in Ado-Ekiti.

The command said Sowore was involved in an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti, after which police were alerted and rescued him.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday.

According to the police, preliminary information indicated that the incident was an altercation and not a kidnapping as alleged in messages circulating on social media.

"Upon receiving the report, police operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued him. He, however, sustained a minor injury and is currently receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital, Ado-Ekiti," the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident to establish what transpired and identify those involved.

The command vowed that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.

It urged members of the public to remain calm and disregard reports suggesting that Sowore had been kidnapped, warning against the circulation of unverified information capable of causing panic and tension.

The police also reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, irrespective of political affiliation or social status.
