The United Nations has condemned an attack in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that killed a nurse and seriously injured another health worker responding to an Ebola alert.

The attack occurred on Saturday, October 24, in Bafwasende, Tshopo province. The World Health Organization reported the incident on Monday, October 26, prompting renewed calls for the protection of healthcare workers involved in the Ebola response.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the organisation's regional director, Mohamed Yakub Janabi, condemned the violence. They warned that fear and misinformation could contribute to attacks against health personnel.

Local authorities had not publicly identified the suspects or provided further details about the circumstances of the attack in the reporting available.

The incident comes as the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to face its deadliest Ebola outbreak on record. The outbreak has placed enormous pressure on healthcare workers and response teams working to identify infections, monitor contacts and prevent further transmission.

Misinformation and distrust have complicated the response in some communities. Previous incidents have included threats against response teams, attacks on health facilities and violence against people involved in Ebola prevention efforts.

The killing highlights the risks faced by medical personnel working in areas affected by both disease outbreaks and insecurity. Attacks against health workers can also disrupt efforts to provide treatment and control the spread of infectious diseases.

The United Nations has called for healthcare workers to be protected and for the circumstances surrounding the attack to be investigated. The attack itself happened on Saturday; the condemnation and report were published on Monday.
