Senegal expands community health worker programme to rural districts

Hundreds of newly trained community health workers will bring basic care, vaccinations and maternal check-ups to villages far from clinics.

Senegal is expanding a programme that trains people from rural communities to deliver basic healthcare in their own villages, from vaccinations to prenatal check-ups.

Health officials say the workers, who are equipped with tablets and diagnostic kits, can treat common illnesses and refer serious cases to the nearest clinic.

Results so far

Districts that joined the programme early have reported more children completing their vaccination schedules and fewer late-stage referrals for pregnant women.

The nearest hospital is three hours away. Now someone we know can check on us every week.
