Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has expressed sadness over the death of the state's former Chief Judge, Justice Adam Ochume Onum, who died on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The governor's reaction was contained in a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula.
Alia described the death of the former judicial officer as a significant loss to Benue State and the Nigerian judiciary, noting that his contributions to the legal profession and administration of justice would be remembered.

The governor recalled that Justice Onum made history in December 2017 when he became the first person of Idoma origin to serve as Chief Judge of Benue State since its creation in 1976.
He said the late jurist distinguished himself through years of service on the bench, demonstrating integrity, courage and commitment to upholding the rule of law.
According to Alia, Onum's contributions extended beyond the judiciary, as he also served on various state commissions and national election petition tribunals, reflecting his dedication to public service.

"Justice Onum was a distinguished legal practitioner and judicial officer whose contributions to the development of the state's legal and judicial institutions will remain part of Benue's history," the governor said.
Alia extended his condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the Idoma nation, the Benue State Judiciary, the Nigerian Bar Association and the entire people of the state.
He also prayed to God to grant the bereaved family and all those affected by the loss the strength to bear the tragedy, while asking for the peaceful repose of the late jurist's soul.
The governor added that Justice Onum's record of service and contributions to the development of Benue State would remain a lasting legacy.
